It's a Licensed Trade — By Law

In British Columbia, any work on a gas system — running new line, extending an existing one, or making the final appliance connection — must be done by a licensed gas fitter, and most installations require a gas permit from Technical Safety BC. This isn't red tape for its own sake: improper connections risk leaks, carbon monoxide, and voided home insurance. If a retailer offers "free installation," ask who's actually doing the gas work and whether a permit is included.

Does Your Home Have the Gas Capacity?

A typical gas range needs roughly 65,000 BTU of capacity. Your existing system was sized for the appliances it already serves — furnace, water heater, maybe a BBQ line or fireplace. Before installation, a gas fitter will check:

• Total demand of all connected appliances versus your meter and regulator capacity
• Pipe diameter and the length of the run from the meter to the kitchen
• Whether a branch line can be extended or a new dedicated run is needed
• Shut-off valve placement — code requires one within reach of the range

In many Kamloops homes, especially in Brocklehurst, North Shore, and older Sahali neighbourhoods, the original gas line serves only the furnace and water heater. Adding a range often means a new run from the meter — very doable, but it affects cost and timeline.

Don't Skip Ventilation

Gas cooking produces combustion byproducts and moisture that electric ranges don't. A range hood vented to the outdoors — not a recirculating model — is strongly recommended, and for high-output ranges it may be required. If your current hood just filters air back into the kitchen, budget for proper venting as part of the project.

What Installation Day Looks Like

A straightforward installation with adequate existing capacity typically takes a few hours: run and secure the line, install the shut-off valve, connect the range with an approved flexible connector, pressure-test the system, and verify burner operation. You'll receive documentation of the permit and inspection — keep it with your home records, since buyers and insurers ask for it.
