Heat Recovery Ventilators: Why Kamloops Homes Need One (and How to Maintain It)

Published on April 7, 2026

If your Kamloops home was built or renovated in the last 15 years, there's a good chance it has a heat recovery ventilator — or HRV — quietly working in the background. But many homeowners don't know what it does, how to maintain it, or whether it's even functioning properly. With spring here and windows starting to open again, now is the perfect time to give your HRV some attention.

What Is an HRV and Why Does Your Home Need One?

Modern construction codes in BC require homes to be well-sealed and insulated to meet energy efficiency standards. While that's great for heating bills, it creates a problem: stale air, excess moisture, and indoor pollutants have nowhere to go. Without fresh air exchange, you can end up with condensation on windows, musty odors, elevated CO₂ levels, and worsening allergies or asthma.

A heat recovery ventilator solves this by continuously exchanging stale indoor air with fresh outdoor air — all while transferring heat between the two airstreams. In winter, the outgoing warm air heats the incoming cold air before it ever reaches your living space, so you're ventilating without wasting the energy you've already paid to heat. In Kamloops winters where temperatures regularly dip below -15°C, this efficiency matters a lot.

Signs Your HRV May Need Attention

HRVs tend to work silently in the background, which means problems often go unnoticed. Watch for these warning signs:

  • Condensation or frost on interior windows, even with the heat on
  • Stuffy or stale-smelling air throughout the house
  • Increased dust or allergy symptoms indoors
  • Unusual noise coming from your HVAC system
  • Higher-than-normal humidity readings (above 50–55% in winter)

If you're experiencing any of these, your HRV may be clogged, improperly balanced, or due for a service.

HRV Maintenance You Can Do Yourself

Some basic HRV maintenance is well within the reach of a handy homeowner:

  • Clean or replace filters every 3 months. Most HRVs have two or three foam or pleated filters that trap dust and debris. Remove them, wash with warm soapy water, rinse thoroughly, and let dry completely before reinstalling.
  • Inspect and clean the core annually. The heat exchange core can be removed in most units and rinsed with water. Check your manufacturer's manual — some cores are not meant to be washed.
  • Check outdoor intake and exhaust hoods. Make sure they're not blocked by debris, bird nests, or overgrown vegetation. Blocked hoods reduce airflow and can cause the unit to work harder than necessary.
  • Verify the controls are set correctly. Many HRVs have a controller with seasonal settings. Spring and fall call for different ventilation rates than deep winter.

When to Call a Professional

While filter cleaning is a DIY job, there are situations where you'll want a licensed HVAC technician to step in. If your HRV is more than 10 years old, hasn't been professionally serviced, or you're seeing signs of moisture damage or mold near the unit, it's time to book a service call. A technician can check airflow balance between intake and exhaust, test defrost cycles, inspect drain lines for blockages, and ensure the unit is actually exchanging air at its rated capacity.

Kamloops's dry summers and cold winters put unique demands on ventilation equipment. A properly maintained HRV not only protects your indoor air quality — it extends the life of your home's structure by controlling moisture levels year-round.

Thinking About Installing an HRV?

If your older Kamloops home doesn't have an HRV, you may be eligible for rebates through BC Hydro or FortisBC when adding one as part of an energy efficiency upgrade. Installation typically takes a day and can be integrated with your existing forced-air duct system or installed as a standalone unit. Either way, the investment pays off quickly in improved comfort, reduced humidity problems, and better air for your family to breathe.
